Joint projects

The BMBF supports seven joint projects and one transfer and networking project within the framework of RePhoR. Each joint project consists of several subprojects and work packages in which the partners from science, industry and practice work together to implement the tasks and objectives of the funding measure.

Regional sewage sludge and ash management for phosphorus recycling for a conurbation

01.07.2020 – 30.06.2025

In the AMPHORE joint project, five water boards in North Rhine-Westphalia cooperate with the support of research partners, engineering offices and commercial enterprises. The aim is to implement a process for phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge ash in demonstration operation and to develop an associated inter-operator concept for the implementation of phosphorus recycling. A region-wide management approach for sewage sludge and sewage sludge ash is being investigated as well as marketing, utilization and disposal paths for the phosphoric acid produced, the residues and by-products. Technology demonstration for the combination of dust firing and acid digestion granulation with integrated heavy metal separation for regional phosphorus recycling in the “Mitteldeutschen Dreiländereck” of Sachsen-Anhalt, Thüringen and Sachsen (DreiSATS)

01.07.2020 – 30.06.2025

The aim of the joint project is the practical prototype testing and demonstration of an innovative, economically and technically viable process chain for thermal sewage sludge utilisation with phosphorus recycling and product utilisation for the model region “Central German Tri-border region”. It is to be shown on a technically relevant scale that marketable fertilizer products can be produced from sewage sludge in a consistently good quality and quantity and can be utilized both regionally and, if necessary, nationally. Climate-neutral and residue-free sewage sludge utilization with phosphoric acid production in southeast Lower Saxony

01.10.2020 – 30.09.2023 (phase 1)

KlimaPhoNds pursues a decentralized phosphate extraction on wastewater treatment plants, and based on this, a central refinement of the phosphate precipitation products to high-quality phosphoric acid, ammonia water and magnesium chloride. More…

Development of a network for resource-efficient phosphorus recycling and management in the Harz and Heide region

01.07.2020 – 30.06.2025

In the last few years, processes that produce crystalline phosphorus products (“struvite”) by means of precipitation and crystallization have become established in the large-scale implementation of phosphorus recovery. P-Net researches the open questions of this technology in order to make it fit for the coming into force of the amended sewage sludge ordinance and thus to maintain its advantages in fertilizer production and to be able to use them in the future. Regional phosphorus recycling in the Rhine-Main area under consideration of industrial and agricultural material cycle

01.07.2020 – 30.06.2026

Within the framework of the joint project RePhoRM, the project participants are developing a large-scale solution for the recovery of phosphorus from sewage sludge ash as well as an organizational solution for a recycling network in the Rhine-Main area. More…

Modified Rhenania phosphate from sewage sludge ash for Bavaria

01.07.2020 – 30.06.2026

The recovery of phosphorus from sewage sludge and sewage sludge ash is a political requirement in Germany. In order to produce an effective and low-pollutant phosphate fertilizer from sewage sludge, the operator of the Altenstadt sewage sludge incineration plant (Emter GmbH) is expanding the existing mono-incineration plant to include a thermochemical process. This conversion will take place in the first half of 2024 and from summer 2024, 15.000 tonnes of thermochemical products containing highly effective phosphate compounds will be produced annually for fertiliser production. Process technologies in the main and satellite operation of an inter-communal recycling center for an optimized regional nutrient recycling

01.07.2020 – 30.06.2025

With the passing of the sewage sludge and fertilizer ordinance in 2017, the municipalities in the northern states in particular are faced with the task of fundamentally redesigning their existing sewage sludge recycling strategies – investment decisions worth millions are pending. The SATELLITE research project focuses its investigations on the relevant process steps upstream and downstream of the actual incineration and recovery process at the supplying sewage treatment plants and the coordination of operation and plant technology in the municipal network.
