Sewage Sludge Conference

2024 brought some innovations and challenges for operators of wastewater treatment and sewage sludge utilisation and disposal plants. This means that the time is ripe for another edition of the ÖWAV Sewage Sludge Conference and an intensive professional exchange at the interface between waste management and water management. The programme committee of the ÖWAV Sewage Sludge Platform has succeeded in attracting a number of proven experts as speakers for this event and putting together an exciting programme for you.

In Austria, the final version of the Waste Incineration Ordinance with significant new requirements for sewage sludge utilisation was published on 13 May 2024, taking into account the Federal Waste Management Plan. At EU level, the provisional agreement on a new version of the Urban Waste Water Directive sets new standards for the quality, reuse and recycling of nutrients from sewage sludge. In Germany and Switzerland, the implementation of the respective requirements for sewage sludge incineration and phosphorus recovery is progressing further, and helpful conclusions can be drawn from the experience gained during the commissioning of the plants and product utilisation.

Based on these national and international developments, the Sewage Sludge Conference 2024 will focus on the new legal framework, issues relating to energy generation and emissions from sewage sludge treatment, new findings on the quality of sewage sludge, the various options and challenges in the recovery of phosphorus and other products from sewage sludge, as well as topics relating to sewage sludge logistics.
